Ajaz Patel breaks Ian Botham’s 41-year-old record

Mumbai born New Zealand’s left arm spinner Ajaz Patel breaks Ian Botham’s record of bagging 14 wickets in a test match.

A day after scalping all ten wickets in an innings and joining the Perfect 10 club along with Jim Laker and Anil Kumble, Ajaz Patel reaches another milestone.

Following his ten-wicket haul in the first innings, Ajaz Patel takes another four in the second innings of the game. Therefore, he takes his bowling figures to 14/227 in the second test at Mumbai. Ajaz has bowled a total of 73.5 overs in the Mumbai test.

The Kiwi spinner broke Ian Botham’s 41-year-old record. Botham took 13 wickets leaking only 106 runs in two innings in a test match in Mumbai way back in 1980. He overtook the likes of Ian Botham, Steve O’Keefe, Fazal Mahmood for having the best bowling figures in a test match against India.

Ajaz achieved this feat on Day 3 of the test match by dismissing Jayant Yadav. Team India then declared their innings after putting up a total of 276/7. India set up a target of 540 runs in front of the Kiwis. Out of the seven wickets, Rachin Ravindra picked up three.

Ajaz Patel also broke Daniel Vettori’s record and stands second in the list of best bowling figures for New Zealand in a test match.
