India’s all-rounder Washington Sundar who was included in the ODI squad has tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday.
The 22 year old has been out of the international circuit for more than 10 months now. The Tamil Nadu based off spinner was set to make a comeback in the national team in the ODI series which was scheduled to begin from January 19.
According to Cricbuzz, Sundar is currently in Mumbai where the team gathered to take off for the Rainbow Nation. But the spinner is now isolating himself.
Sundar was out due to an injury in March 2021 but returned to the domestic team to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier. The 22 year old performed decently in the tournament.
“I have nothing to comment, I will come back to you soon,” Sundar was quoted as saying in the report awhen asked about his Covid-19 test reports.
“He [Sundar] tested positive some days back and it has been decided that he will not travel with the squad”, a BCCI official said.
The other members included in the white ball series will travel to South Africa on Wednesday.
Spinning all rounder Jayant Yadav who is included in team India’s test squad has been asked to stay back after the conclusion of the red ball series. He is likely to replace Sundar in the ODI series.
The three match ODI series starting from January 19 will be led by KL Rahul after Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. The first two matches will be held in Paarl. Team India will then travel back to Cape Town to play the final game of the series on January 23.
