New Zealand Women took on Bangladesh Women in yesterday’s clash of the 2022 Women’s World Cup. In the match being played at University Oval, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl first. The match was pretty much in their control from the very beginning, thanks to the domination of the New Zealand bowlers in the first innings.
A viral video from the match has shown New Zealand Women’s Wicketkeeper Katey Martin getting involved in a hilarious incident. A Bangladeshi batter was way out of the crease while attempting to take a single and wicket-keeper Katey Martin had an incredible opportunity to run her out. However, when the fielder threw the ball to Katey Martin, the ball got stuck inside her gloves and when she tried to throw the ball towards the wicket, she could not do it as it was stuck!
The Bangladeshi batter successfully entered the field and the wicketkeeper then realised what had happened and started laughing. She then opened her gloves to free the ball.
Batting first, Bangladesh got a good enough start from their two openers Shamina Sultana and Fargana Hoque. Unfortunately, none of the middle order batters managed to continue converting the great start they had received from the openers and Bangladesh managed to score only 140 runs in 27 overs. Only 27 overs were played due to rain delays.
New Zealand Women chased down to total pretty easily in just 20 overs and won by 9 wickets. Suzie Bates scored an unbeaten 79 off 68 and Amelia Kerr scored 47 off 37. Their partnership alone was good enough to win them the match.
With this win, New Zealand is now seated at the fourth position on the points table while Bangladesh is in the 7th position.
