Team India on Tuesday released their 16-man squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand. Rohit Sharma has been named as the captain of the T20I squad. KL Rahul has been appointed as the vice-captain of the team.
India are scheduled to take on New Zealand from November 17 after an early exit from the T20 World Cup. Team India will play three T20Is and two tests.
Virat Kohli who has decided to step down as the captain of the T20I squad has been rested along with Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammad Shami and Hardik Pandya.
Keeping in mind the performances in the latest edition of IPL, Venkatesh Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad have been included in the squad. Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal and Mohammad Siraj are also returning to the squad after being neglected for the ICC event. Uncapped pacer Harshal Patel has also been included in the squad after a brilliant IPL season.
However, some of the players have been dropped after a forgetful performance in the ICC T20 WC.
These are the following players who have been dropped due to poor performances in the ICC T20 WC in UAE:
1. Varun Chakravarthy
Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been one of the biggest disappointments for team India in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. The spinner failed to bag any limelight during the tournament. Chakravarthy failed to pick up a single wicket in the tournament. In three matches he has bowled for about 11 overs but failed to pick up a wicket. He has bowled at an average of 6.45.
2. Shardul Thakur
After India’s loss in the opening encounter against Pakistan, Shardul Thakur was included in the team in place of seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. But Thakur failed to impress with the leather. Thakur has played two matches in the tournament. In two matches, he failed to pick up a wicket. Thakur has conceded runs way more than what he was expected to do.
3. Rahul Chahar
Rahul Chahar was included in the WC squad in place of Yuzvendra Chahal keeping in mind the conditions in UAE. The selectors neglected Chahal because of the lack of form. Despite Chahal’s return to form during the second half of IPL 2021, he was overlooked for Chahar. Yuzvendra Chahal who has immense success was neglected. Rahul Chahar failed to impress in the tournament. He was included in the final game against Namibia. But he failed to utilise the opportunity in hand as he conceded 30 runs in 4 overs and failed to pick up a wicket.
