Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting was congratulates Indian batsmen Shreyas Iyer as he makes his test debut against New Zealand on Thursday at Kanpur.

Shreyas Iyer receives his cap from India’s legendary batsmen Sunil Gavaskar at the Green Park Stadium. Gavaskar was seen addressing the team hurdle ahead of the game.
The 26-year-old became India’s 303rd Test cricketer and the first since all rounder Yuvraj Singh in 2003 to make his Test debut against New Zealand.
Under new head coach Rahul Dravid, team India has brought back the old tradition of handing the caps to the debutants from former cricketers. Earlier during the T20I series, Ajit Agarkar handed Harshal Patel his cap.
Ricky Ponting is the head coach of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals. Iyer and Ponting have closely worked for a while now and the former cricketer was proud of seeing his student enter the Test arena at the highest level.
Ricky Ponting shared a video of Shreyas Iyer receiving his cap which was released in the official twitter handle of BCCI. Ponting wrote: “Having seen all the work you’ve put in over the last few years, very well deserved and only the beginning for you mate. Proud of you @ShreyasIyer15.”

The three-time World Cup winner along with Iyer had put up a stellar show in the 2020 edition of IPL. DC reached the finals of the tournament. Shreyas Iyer was the highest scorer of the tournament as he managed to score 519 runs.
But Iyer’s career was halted by his shoulder injury which prevented him from playing in the first half of the 2021 edition of IPL. Rishabh Pant was named as the captain of the squad. Iyer returned in the 2nd leg of IPL. In eight games he managed to score 175 runs. But he did not get his captaincy back. Iyer also earned a place in India’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE as a reserve player.
Iyer also earned a spot in the three match T20I series against NZ. He scored 5 and 25 in the 1st and 3rd match. India whitewashed the Kiwis as they won comprehensively by 3-0.
