Daryl Mitchell replaces injured Devon Conway for the two match test series against India starting from November 25 in Kanpur.
Left hand batsmen Devon Conway was ruled out of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2021 after breaking his hand in the semi-finals of the tournament against England. Conway injured himself by hitting his hand in his willow out of frustration after being dismissed by Liam Livingstone during the run chase.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead on Sunday said that the absence of Conway provides an opportunity for Mitchell to show what he has in his arsenal.
“It’s a shame for Devon to miss out on the first series of the new World Test Championship cycle, but it also offers up an opportunity for someone else,” coach Gary Stead said.
“Daryl’s versatility means he can cover a lot of batting positions and he’s certainly got plenty of confidence at the moment.
“He’s proven he can perform in test cricket and I know he’s excited to re-join the test group.”
Daryl Mitchell has been in a great form since the start of the tournament. The right-handed opener has been the highest scorer for the Kiwis so far in the tournament. He has scored 97 runs at an average of 39.40 and a strike rate in excess of 140.
The Kiwis will arrive to India on Monday after playing the finals of the ICC T20 World Cup on Sunday. The first T20 match of the three-match series begins from November 17 in Jaipur, followed by Ranchi on the 19th, and Kolkata on the 21st.
The two match test series will also begin from November 25 in Kanpur followed by the second test which will begin from December 3 in Mumbai.
New Zealand’s tour of India will conclude on December 7.
