Top 5 Most Expensive Spells in IPL History

Over the years we have seen several bowlers conceding way too many runs in their 4-overs spell in the Indian Premier League. In this article, we shall be talking about the Top 5 most expensive spells ever bowled in IPL’s history.

5. Sandeep Sharma (1/65 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Sandeep Sharma has always been known to be very economical in the IPL. He is a very experienced bowler and is extremely lethal in the powerplay with the new ball. However, he once conceded as many as 65 runs in his four-over spell against Sunrisers during his days at Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2014.

In the first two overs, Sandeep Sharma was quite good and he conceded 13 runs in his first two overs. However, in the next two overs, he conceded 26 runs each and thus bowled a very expensive spell of 65 runs. He picked up 1 wicket in his spell though.

4. Umesh Yadav (0/65 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore)

During his days at Kolkata Knight Riders back in IPL 2013, Umesh Yadav was one of their best pacers but his confidence was totally shattered after their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli were both in form and they hit a total of 47 runs in his last 2 overs. In his first two overs, Umesh had conceded 18 runs. In IPL 2022, he has been bought again by KKR.

3. Ishant Sharma (0/66 vs Chennai Super Kings)

In IPL 2013, Ishan Sharma gave away the most expensive T20 spell in his career. He then played for Sunrisers Hyderabad. In his match against Chennai Super Kings, Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina completely exploited him. Murali Vijay hit 3 sixes an over of his and Suresh Raina hit 4 fours in an over. He conceded a total of 66 runs against CSK that day.

2. Mujeeb Ur Rahman (0/66 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s spell was the most recent out of all these spells as it took place in IPL 2019. Mujeeb Ur Rahman used to play for Punjab Kings back then. In a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he conceded as much as 66 runs. David Warner, Kane Williamson and Mohammad Nabi all went rogue against him hit a lot of runs against him.

1. Basil Thampi (0/70 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Basil Thampi’s spell against Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2018 is the costliest spell in IPL history and perhaps the most memorable one simply because of the fabulous knock of AB De Villiers. Moeen Ali and AB De Villiers both went behind him in that match. In his very first over, Moeen Ali hit 3 sixes against him. AB De Villiers scored 18 runs in his second over. Shockingly, Kane Williamson let him bowl 4 overs even after his horrible performance in that match.
