VIDEO: Canada players started celebrating too early; Lost to USA in Super Over

During the 10th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup American Region Qualifiers between Canada and USA on Wednesday in Antigua, Canada players started celebrating early thinking that their wicket-keeper Hamza Tariq ran out USA player Rusty Theron on the last ball of the match. USA players Theron and Ali Khan utilised the opportunity and took the second run as well.

Upon winning the toss, Canada skipper Navneet Dhaliwal opted to bat first. Canada got off to a flying start as their openers Hiral Patel and Rayyan Pathan added 33 runs for the opening wicket before Ian Holland removed Hiral Patel in the final ball of the powerplay.

Hollan removed Pathan as well as Canada went from 33/0 to 36/2 in no time. Skipper Dhaliwal (44) and Ravinder pal Singh (44) stitched 90 runs for the 4th wicket Dhaliwal was removed by former Protea’s pacer Rusty Theron. Theron and Ali Khan picked up a wicket each and restricted Canada to 142/5 at the end of 20 overs.

While chasing the target of 143, USA had a disappointing start to the innings. They were reduced to 44/5 in the first 10 overs. USA’s first ODI centurion Jaskaran Malhotra and Nisarg Patel added 42 runs for the 6th wicket before Nisarg Patel was removed by Jatinder pal Matharu. Karima Gore’s smashed a quickfire 31 off 15 but he was dismissed in the penultimate ball of the innings.

USA required three runs off the last ball with Ali Khan and Rusty Theron in the crease. Ali Khan was on strike. Ali Khan tried to smash a six off Matharu’s delivery but could not connect it well. The two completed a run off a bye. However, Hamza thought he ran out Theron and started celebrating in the ground.

Hamza thought that even if Theron was not out, they have won the match by a run. However, Theron was smart enough as he knew he was not out. He called out Ali Khan to run for a second as the Canadian players were busy celebrating in the middle of the pitch. The match was tied and it went to the super over.
