Sri Lanka defeated Namibia by 7 wickets in their Group A Round 1 match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup. Upon winning the toss, Sri Lanka chose to field first at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

Batting first, Namibia lost an early wicket in the form of Stephan Baard. Maheesh Theekshana removed the opener after scoring 7 off 11 deliveries. Namibia lost the wicket of the other opener just before the conclusion of the powerplay. Namibia only managed to score 30 at the expense of two wickets in the first six overs.

Craig Williams and skipper Gerhard Erasmus took the innings forward for Namibia. The two had put up a 39-run partnership before the skipper lost his wicket to Lahiru Kumara in the 13th over of the game. Wickets started falling once the partnership between the two ended. Namibia went from 68/2 to 90/7 in just 5 overs.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka brought Chameera back into the attack in the 19th over of the game. In the third ball of the over, Dasun Shanaka caught a brilliant catch off Dushmantha Chameera’s delivery. Chameera bowled a short ball. The batsmen hurried to get a shot and top edged the ball. For a moment it seemed as if the ball will drop in front of the cover fielder. But the Lankan skipper moves across in a flash and puts in a slide to grab this with his right hand. Ruben Trumpelmann makes his way to the pavilion after facing three deliveries as he managed to score a run.

In the end Namibia were bowled for 96 runs with three balls left. Sri Lanka chased down the target easily with 39 balls to spare.
