Ever witnessed a match where the Umpire counted the number of balls in an over wrong and called off an over with just 5 deliveries bowled? No Right? Well, something exactly like that happened in today’s IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings. Having won the toss, CSK opted to bowl first and Punjab Kings had a pretty good performance in the first innings. They were able to reach a total of 180 which is a reasonably decent first innings total at the Brabourne stadium. However, there was a big controversy near the end of the innings.
Dwayne Bravo was bowling the last over and on the very last delivery of the match, Vaibhav Arora was facing him. Arora took 1 run in the last ball and the players started walking out of the pitch. However, the spectators and PBKS staff were confused because the Star Sports scoring table showed that only 5 balls had been played and thus the PBKS staff even went up to the umpire to enquire. However, it was then understood that it was a mistake on Star Sports’ (broadcasters) part and the over was indeed finished.
However, people watching the match at home did not know this and they were surprised as to why the last over only had 5 balls. Some even went on to tweet that CSK had fixed the match and thus these big mistakes were being committed by the umpire!
Coming back to the match, CSK seems to be in big trouble in the second innings. They have already lost 5 wickets for below 50 runs and need to score about 120 more runs at a run rate of more than 13.
