Upon winning the toss, Team India posted 345 runs on the board and then restricted the visitors in under 296 runs. The hosts then declared the innings after scoring 234/7 runs on the board. New Zealand required 284 runs to win the first of two tests at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

Ravichandran Ashwin picked up the wicket of Will Young quite late on the day as NZ were at 4/1 at stumps on Day 4. However, the Indian bowlers found it very hard to pick their first wicket of the day on Day 5. They were unable to break the partnership between Tom Latham and nightwatchman William Sommerville. The two guided NZ to 79/1 after the first session on the final day of the test match.

However, the Indian bowlers came up with a plan after lunch as Umesh Yadav trapped Sommerville on the first ball after lunch by bowling a short delivery. Shubman Gill took an excellent low catch and removed the batsmen.

In the 40th over of the match, Umesh Yadav stunned the Kiwi opener Kane Williamson. Yadav’s ability to seam the ball inwards was on display when he bowled an unplayable delivery as described the commentator to Kane Williamson. The ball deviated after pitching as it beat the bat, the pads and the stumps. Williamson’s expression described how good the ball was as the skipper was quick enough to react.
