The Women’s ODI World Cup 2021 has kicked off with a bang and the first 3 matches that have already been played were absolute thrillers with the matches being decided in the very last over. The third match of the tournament was played between Australia and England tonight and the Aussies just managed to steal a 12 runs victory in the last over. However, much of credits for that win should be attributed to Jess Jonassen who was simply sensational in the last over.
In the match being played at the Seddon Park, England W won the toss and opted to bowl first. Australia never looked to be under pressure as opener Rachael Haynes gave them the perfect start. She scored 130 runs in just 131 deliveries. Her partnership with Meg Lanning scored the majority runs for Australia and gave them just the push they needed. Meg Lanning herself scored 86 runs in 110 deliveries.
Both of them pretty much took care of Australia’s innings and Beth Mooney (27 off 19) and Ellyse Perry (14 off 5) who came in after them did not have much to do. Australia were able to score a huge total of 310 in 50 overs.
Coming in to chase, England got the exact opposite start as their opener Luren Winfield-Hill departed for zero. However, their middle order was fabulous. The three players – Tamsin Beaumont (74 off 82), Heather Knight (40 off 51) and Nat Sciver (109 off 85) changed the fate of the match completely and at this point, England were winning.
However, the batters that came after them were not able to last long and England thus needed 15 runs to win in the last over.
Australian captain Meg Lanning sent in spinner Jess Jonassen to bowl and that was when she literally conjured magic. Facing her on the second ball of the over, English batsman Katherine Brunt played a powerful shot straight into Jess’s hands and she took an outstanding one-handed catch.
She took another wicket in the same over and thus won the match for Australia by 12 runs.
